NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation)

Topic: Russian and Chinese Military Influence in Conflicts on the African Continent

Level: Advanced

ABOUT | ORGANIZATION

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a military and political alliance of 30 countries in Europe and North America, established in 1949. The primary purpose of NATO is to provide collective defense and security against potential threats to its member states. This includes a commitment to mutual defense, with an attack against one member state considered an attack against all. NATO also works to promote stability and security in the Euro-Atlantic region through partnerships, collaboration, and dialogue with non-member states and other international organizations. NATO has played a critical role in international security, including during the Cold War and in the response to global terrorism.

They will also examine the root causes of conflicts in Africa and evaluate the effectiveness of current peacekeeping efforts. The committee aims to find a way to mitigate the negative effects of foreign military involvement in African conflicts and promote sustainable peace and security on the continent.

Your Chairs

Leah Mathiesen

I'm Leah, currently studying law in my final year at the University of Hamburg, and together with Charlotte I have the pleasure of chairing NATO this year. My involvement in the MUN world started in my first semester at the HanseMUN society in 2017 and then continued with attending numerous conferences as a delegate, chair and secretariat member. Besides working and studying, I like to spend my time with sports, reading, and of course, typical for MUNers, traveling. I am excited to meet you all in Mannheim (again) for a great Conference!

Charlotte Stange

Charlotte is a law student in Hamburg, Germany, with a strong interest in international tax law. In addition to her academic studies, she has been spending her time in the MUN circuit since 2019 and has taken up sailing. It is safe to say that she is looking forward to navigating the debate during MAMUN 2023 with her co-chair and delegates!
