Level: Intermediate
ABOUT | ORGANIZATION
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for protecting and providing assistance to refugees, asylum seekers, stateless persons, and other displaced individuals. Established in 1950, the UNHCR works to ensure that individuals fleeing conflict or persecution can access protection, shelter, and basic necessities, such as food, water, and healthcare. The agency also helps refugees and other displaced individuals to rebuild their lives and find lasting solutions, such as resettlement in another country or return to their home country. The UNHCR works in collaboration with governments, NGOs, and other partners to address the needs of displaced individuals and advocate for their rights.
ABOUT | TOPIC
The UNHCR committee will address the pressing issue of “Internally Displaced Climate Refugees in South and Southeast Asia”. Climate change has triggered natural disasters and environmental degradation, leading to the displacement of millions of people in the region. The committee will discuss how to provide assistance and protection to these vulnerable populations, including the provision of shelter, food, water, and healthcare. Additionally, they will examine how to address the root causes of displacement and prevent further harm from climate change. This committee aims to find sustainable solutions to address the needs of internally displaced climate refugees in South and Southeast Asia.
Your Chairs
Laila Khalifa
Heya! My name’s Laila, I study political science at the university of Mannheim and I’m mostly known for the pink hair that you can spot from a mile away. I’ve been doing MUN for 6 years now which seems crazy but I must admit that those definitely led to me meeting the people and experiencing the memories that have stuck with me the most. I’m so excited to be chairing at this years MaMUN after its successful revival last year. See you then dudes!
Alexander Feil
Hey! My name is Alex and as a Munich based mathematics student & songwriter I am the chair for all those who don’t study something politics-related. In the UNHCR you can expect the debate to go down as fair as possible, with us chair trying to get everyone involved. This also applies to punishments - last year in the UNHRC we had 2 push ups for every „I“ and the chairs singing „Millionaires“ by The Script. Let’s see what we come up with for MAMUN 2023!
